Retiring Wewoka Mayor Honored; Ryan Takes Oath
The Wewoka City Council swore in a new mayor and made a short presentation to the retiring mayor during their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 11.
In other action preceding this “changing of the guard,” the Council voted to support a Seminole County Resolution calling for a special election concerning a 522 District that will be held on June 13. City Manager Mosley explained the County Commissioners are asking the City of Wewoka to support this resolution they passed seeking voter’s approval for the 522 District, which would help raise funds with a 3-mil ad valorem tax levy to help support combining the three services currently in operation into a county- wide ambulance service.
The Council tabled action on an agenda item that would have designated a permanent location for the Wewoka Police Department. Councilmember Ryan offered his opinion that the City wasn’t ready make a designation yet, noting there are some other options on the table that they need to look at first.
Following these items, Ward Three Council Member Tom Ryan was administered the oath of office of Mayor by City Attorney Glenn Sharpe. Ryan was the only candidate that filed to run for the seat being vacated by retiring Mayor Paige Sheffield- Sherry.
Mosley next presented a plaque to the retiring Mayor and read it aloud: “This award is presented to the Honorable Mayor Paige Sherry in recognition and sincere appreciation for nine years of valuable and dedicated service to the City of Wewoka from 2014 to 2023.”
The Councilmembers and audience loudly applauded their approval of this sentiment.
The City Council portion of the Tuesday meeting concluded with an executive session to discuss to go over the city attorney’s employment. No action was taken.
