Recreational Marijuana Petition Fails

Posted in:

This week at the House, we spent hours on the floor each day hearing, debating and voting on bills. Ultimately, we heard 163 bills, but that still leaves 380 House bills that are eligible to be considered in the coming weeks.

We have until Thursday, March 23 to hear these remaining bills. I anticipate presenting my bills on the House floor in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, voters spoke out loudly against State Question 820, which would have implemented recreational marijuana in Oklahoma. With 61% of the statewide vote rejecting SQ820, the measure failed.

Pottawatomie County voted 65% to reject SQ820, and Seminole County voted 68% against the state question. Interestingly, not a single county in Oklahoma voted in favor of the state question. If the measure had been approved, the state would have been the 22nd state to legalize adult use of cannabis.

While recreational marijuana may have failed, medical marijuana still remains legal and accessible for licensed users. The House will continue to work to ensure laws surrounding medical marijuana are properly enforced.

When voters approved marijuana for medical use in 2018, they voted in good faith that the industry would be regulated properly, operators would operate legal and the public would remain safe. It’s the job of the Legislature to ensure that remains the case, and we’re working again this year on several bills related to the industry.

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. You may reach me at danny.williams@okhouse.gov or 405-5577372. Thank you for the honor of representing House District 28 at the State Capitol!

Rep. Danny Williams, a Republican, represents House District 28 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. His district includes Seminole County and northern Pottawatomie County.
