Pleasant Grove/Prairie View School Reunion

The Pleasant Grove/Prairie View School reunion was held recently, at the Kelly Haney Building on the Seminole State College campus.

Visiting took place as all the former students were happy to see one another again. The reunion was not held last year, due to the Covidvirus-19 sickness. The Silent-auction proved successful, as various items were donated, for the reunion’s cause. One game of Bingo was played, while waiting for more attendees to arrive.

Dinner was catered for the reunion meeting. John C. Winrow, Midwest City, asked for the blessing for the meal. The dinner was excellent as adequate choices were available, for selection.

Chairman Mary F. McCormick called the business meeting to order. Chairman McCormick recognized several classmates who remained in Seminole. They were: J.P. Duvall, who had served the Varnum Public Schools over fifty years as a member of the school board. Fred Combs who served

Fred Combs who served as a County Commissioner for District 2, Seminole County.

Then, Chairman McCormick reported that she wanted the achievement of her little sister

Dora S. Young, to be known. She reported that Dora was the first elected woman Chief of an Indian Tribe in Oklahoma. Chairman McCormick then noted that it could be that Dora was even the first elected woman Chief in the United States.

Chairman McCormick then introduced Ella Mae Colman, who was present. Chairman McCormick noted that Ella was the first elected woman for Second Chief of the Seminole Nation. Ella Mae then came forward and expressed her gratitude for being recognized, as well as other comments.

Secretary Linda Hardy read the minutes for the previous meeting. Minutes were approved as presented.

Other business taken was the election of new officers for the next year. Elected to serve for the new year were: Fred Combs - President; Linda Choate Hardy - Secretary; James Choate - Treasurer, and Carolyn Calaway Myers - Historian.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
