The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) announced Monday it won first place at the regional competition for the National Science Bowl (NSB). As the Oklahoma state champions, the OSSM team of high school seniors will compete in the national competition in Washington D.C. in April. Additionally, The OSSM team of high school juniors took second place.

“The National Science Bowl is an extraordinary competition, and we congratulate the OSSM teams for their outstanding performance,” said Edna McDuffie Manning, Ed.D., interim president of the OSSM. “The OSSM students consistently perform well in the NSB having won the top two spots since entering it in 2017.”

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the NSB brings together more than 14,000 middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fastpaced, question-and-answer format. During the competition, they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math.

“Over the past seven years, more than 100 OSSM students have participated in the NSB and won,” said Fazlur Rahman, Ph.D., chemistry professor and coach for the OSSM science bowl. “With a score of 160, the team of seniors took the championship for the state of Oklahoma.”
