Muscogee Nation Rebrands, Drops ‘Creek’ in Name

Posted in:

The Muscogee Nation, which includes a portion of Seminole County in its boundaries, has dropped the name “Creek” in a new branding effort that was announced this week.

As part of the new branding, Muscogee Nation creative manager Brian OnTheHill created a new logo for the tribe that draws its inspiration from Mississippian design on pottery and shell carvings.

The tribe said in a statement Tuesday that its name in all official business would remain the Muscogee (Creek) Nation as specified in its constitution. According to OnTheHill, “Creek” is a misnomer coined originally by British colonists.

The tribe, based in Okmulgee, is one of the largest in the U.S., with more than 87,000 citizens.

The Nation’s Reservation consists of the geographical boundaries for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation as it existed in 1900 per the Creek Nation Constitution and includes, in whole or in part, the counties of Creek, Hughes, Seminole, McIntosh, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Tulsa, Rogers, Mayes, and Wagoner.
