Man on Probation Faces New Felony Charge
A Shawnee man currently on probation for grand larceny is facing a felony charge for allegedly being in possession of a stolen car.
Richard W. Brooks, 52, has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, a felony, and malicious injury to property under $1,000, a misdemeanor. The charges were filed last Friday by the Seminole County District Attorney’s office.
The filing documents allege that Brooks was knowingly in possession of a 1993 Chevrolet Z28 that was reported as stolen on April 13. Brooks is also accused of “maliciously” damaging the car by busting out the driver’s side window and breaking its steering column.
According to the documents, the felony is punishable by up to two years in prison and the misdemeanor carries a potential fine of up to $500 or up to one year in the county jail, or both.
Court records show that bond was set at $10,000 and Brooks is due back in court on June 3 for a status hearing.
According to court records, Brooks has a lengthy rap sheet with Seminole County. His previous charges include second-degree burglary and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. In 2019, he entered a guilty plea to a felony charge of grand larceny. Brooks received a five-year prison sentence in the grand larceny case, but was released in February and was on probation when the alleged auto theft occurred. According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Brooks has been in and out of prison since 2009.
