Local Utility Facing Possible Investigation in Arkansas

Posted in:

The company that provides natural gas services to customers in Seminole is facing a possible investigation in Arkansas into its purchasing and billing practices in that state, which could have a local effect.

According to the online publication OK Energy Today, Attorney General Tim Griffin has filed a motion with the with the Arkansas Public Service Commission to investigate how Summit Utilities buys its gas and if there are any potential violations related to the company’s billing process.

“They’re under an obligation to take steps that are consistent with Arkansas law and regulation when they’re buying gas. We have not had similar complaints regarding other gas companies and I think that’s important to point out. That tells me how the gas was purchased, when it was purchased, at a minimum that needs to be examined.”

During the news conference, Griffin said his office has received an estimated 2,800 complaints about the company’s billing practices.

Last June, voters approved a proposition to grant Summit, previously known as Centerpoint Energy, a 25-year franchise for the sale of natural gas in the City of Seminole. Earlier last year, Summit announced it was purchasing Centerpoint’s gas distribution assets in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texarkana, Texas. In recent weeks, multiple people in the Seminole area have taken to social media to air complaints about high gas bills.

A bill to regulate utilities and stop rate hikes has passed through the Oklahoma Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee. At press time, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission was holding a special meeting to discuss the bill.
