Local Students Learn About Civic Duty in Mock Trial

Posted in:

This past week, students from Northwood and the Middle school took part in a mock trial designed to teach them about civil responsibility and the possibilities available to them when it comes to a career in law.

The trial, which was a part of the Camp I Can summer learning program that Seminole Public Schools is hosting in lieu of traditional summer school programs this year, was conducted by local attorneys Jim Choate and Brad Carter at the Sem inole Municipal building. In order to teach the kids about the trial process and court proceedings, participating students were summoned for jury duty while in class by the schools’ resource officer, Leo Tiger, before being bussed to the courtroom. “It is very important for our students to understand court proceedings and the responsibilities of a juror because one day it might be their civic duty to serve on a jury,” affirmed Middle School Principal David Carter.

During the mock trial, Assistant Superintendent Angela Willmett served as the presiding judge, with Shari Carter and Sharon Emmitt acting as the defendant and key witness, respectively. According to Carter, the students took their duties as jurors seriously, as they attentively listened to the testimony and closely examined the evidence which was presented.

“This was a great opportunity for our students,” stated Principal Carter. “Not only did it teach students about civic responsibility, but it also opened their eyes to possible career opportunities which are a part of the Individual Career Academic Plan.”
