Local American Legion Post Flies Special Flag To Honor Fallen Marine

Posted in:

American Legion Post 204 is flying a burial flag the month of April in honor of a fallen Marine who was a lifelong resident of Seminole County. This month’s flag, flown in Veterans Park in downtown Seminole, is in honor of George Calvin Loman, who passed away in January 2022 at the age of 93.

Loman, the son of Chris and Ethel Mae (Halk) Loman, was born on May 6, 1928, in the Salem community near Henryetta. His family moved to Seminole County, where he was brought up and attended the old Butner schools.

Loman joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served for two years in Japan and China. He married Ellen Joyce Lowe on June 12, 1951, in Van Buren, Arkansas. He worked in the oil field and at the glass plant in Henryetta.

The local American Legion post honors a different deceased veteran each month, part of a national effort to bring awareness to local fallen service members. All veterans that have passed away are eligible to be honored by the Ameri-can Legion. To nominate a veteran, contact Post Commander Carl Odom at (405) 380-4615.

The Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.
