Konawa Man Arrested on Stolen Vehicle, Drug Charges
A Konawa man was arrested after police found him asleep in a car that had been reported as stolen out of Johnston County.
Douglas Weber, 26, was arrested in late December and faces a felony charge of possession of a stolen vehicle as well as a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. The charges were filed Jan. 5 in Seminole County District Court.
According to an affidavit, Officer Chad Vandever of the Konawa Police Department was dispatched to 103 East Street on reports that a stolen vehicle was parked at that location.
Vandever and Officer Flowers arrived on scene and found Weber asleep in the vehicle and drew their weapons on Weber as a precaution.
Weber was ordered out of the car and was advised of his Miranda rights by Vandever. As Weber was patted down, a syringe was found in his pocket and a search of the vehicle yielded two metal spoons, one of which had a crystalized white substance on it. Marijuana was also discovered in Weber’s backpack, along with multiple other items, including a temporary car tag that had been altered.
According to the affidavit, Weber said that he was walking down a dirt road and was offered a ride in the car. He said he agreed to get in then fell asleep inside a short time later.
Upon further questioning, Weber said he wanted “to be honest” and apologize to the owner of the car for stealing it. Vandever asked the owner, who was also on scene, if he wanted to hear the apology, telling him he did not have to say anything back to Weber and that he could walk away at any time.
In his apology to the victim, Weber said someone else told him the keys were always left in the car and it was always unlocked. According to the affidavit, Weber then looked down and said, “I’m going back to prison.”
Weber then invoked his Miranda rights and no further questions were asked by police.
According to court records, a status conference was scheduled for Jan. 21 at the Seminole County Courthouse.
