Konawa Hit Head On By Severe Storm

Posted in:

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued several tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warning for storms that would be racing across Oklahoma.

Severe storms packing heavy rain and high winds moved across the state early Wednesday morning, uprooting trees, and breaking down power lines, leaving residents without power.

An overnight storm with reported wind speeds of more than 50mph knocked out power to customers and caused widespread structural damage in and around the downtown Konawa area.

Area law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency crews all encountered downed trees and limbs blocking roadways in the early hours of Wednesday as first responders scrambled to assess the storm’s damage. There were no injuries reported at this time.

The hardest hit area of town was in the Hillside Drive and Maple Street neighborhood.

Fallen power lines over chain link fence kept Konawa resident Danny Long from being able to exit his house until the electricity could be shut off in the neighborhood.

“It came fast and hit hard without warning” said Konawa resident Bethany Daigrepont. “I watched the electric line snap and fall causing the house to catch fire across the street”. Said Daigrepont.

Ernie Willis, Emergency Management Director for the City of Seminole, reported with the severe storm that passed through Seminole County early Wednesday morning came with it an additional 6 inches of rain.
