Jail Tax Proposal Rejected, Donaho Keeps Board Seat

Voters rejected a proposed quarter-cent sales tax to fund operations at the Seminole County Jail at the ballot box on Tuesday.

The proposition failed by a margin of 621 votes. According to the final but unofficial results from the Oklahoma State Election Board, 838 votes were cast in opposition to the tax and only 217 votes were cast in favor of it.

A half-cent tax was approved by voters in 2006 for jail construction and operations and will drop to a quarter cent in 2027. The new tax, had it been approved, would have been in addition to the current tax. opposition from the City of Seminole, the Seminole Economic Development Council, the Seminole Chamber of Commerce and Mark Mosley, City Manager of Wewoka.

Also on Tuesday, incumbent Marci Donaho was re-elected to her seat on the Seminole School Board. Donaho received 347 votes to challenger Jolene Dou cette’s 145.

In the Butner School District, Kelli Kannard unseated Michael G. Sowder on the school board. Kennard received 49 votes and Sowder received 24.

Patrons of the Wewoka Public School District approved a $7 million bond proposal to build a new middle school. The proposal passed by a large margin, receiving 143 “yes” votes to 77 “no” votes. The school will be built in the same block as the district’s other two sites and will be equipped with safe rooms.

In Maud, Cary Fletcher beat out Virgina Stephens for the Ward Two seat on the City Council by one vote. Fletcher received 16 votes and Stephens claimed 15.
