Garage Sale Wonders and Chocolate Rainbows

To add humor on these dreary, rainy days, I’ll share these two poems. I wrote and presented to a Lion’s Club New Year’s Eve gathering years ago. It’s, entitled “Dirty Fixer-uppers and Half-dressed Babes.” The other brings memories of movies with my favorite snack.

DIRTY FIXER-UPPERS AND HALF-DRESSED BABES

Early mornings are best—get ahead of the crowd, searching for stuff to save money I vowed.

Amid tables strewn all over the place, laden with everything for every taste.

Dusty old picture frames, boxes of half-used cards, and quilt tops and varied fabric by the yard.

Half-dressed Barbie dolls plead for freedom. Antique lampshades make me think I need’m.

Fixer-up lawn mowers almost ready to run with tools by the dozen and maybe a gun.

Book bags and luggage for all I can store, forgetting my closets have room for no more.

Boxes of cassettes, videos and such promise entertainment I love so much.

Car tires and lug wrenches next to perfume, and a wedding cake topper: the bride and the groom.

Mismatched dishes, jelly glasses, Tupperware. How much broken stereos are really out there?

Tarpaulins spread on the grass to display enough used jeans to sell on Ebay!

The dedicated never tire and dare not quit, not for Grandma’s sore feet or kids in a fit.

But…sooner or later the money runs out, and we head back home to unload, no doubt.

I look around at the stuff I just bought, then try to justify my purchases before I’m caught.

I thought that old chair would stand straight and tall, but I hadn’t noticed the taped-up leg, after all.

The like-new towel was unfolded and…wow! Lots of holes and stains materialized somehow.

The snappy cap that seemed to fit just right must have shrunk in the car— now it’s too tight.

And the thumb harp—I couldn’t make a tune, but wouldn’t it surely make a nice gift real soon?

The fan for my husband—I gave it to him— could be heard in the next county when I plugged it in!

I told him no doubt, I can easily get back my money, with our own garage sale— ain’t that right honey?

And nowadays, for more movie times, here’s a favorite popcorn treat, called CHASING CHOCOLATE RAINBOWS.

You have to try it. No way to describe its delicious contrast:
