Fugate Responds to Governor’s Veto of Pro-Public School Legislation

Posted in:

State Rep. Andy Fugate, D-Del City, released the following statement today after Governor Kevin Stitt vetoed legislation that would extend a sales tax exemption to booster clubs of public schools.

House Bill 1849, authored by Fugate, creates a sales tax exemption for parent-teacher associations sanctioned by a school district and school support organization, defined as sanctioned non-profit organizations that collect funds in support of a school organization, club, or activity of a school.

“Yesterday, Governor Stitt vetoed a bill to extend the school sales tax exemption to booster clubs for public schools,” said Fugate. “The Governor’s one sentence veto message claimed the exemption extension to booster clubs 'unnecessarily complicates the tax code.’

“122 legislators found it simple enough to approve.

“Perhaps it is too complicated for the Governor because it requires school board approval and private schools don’t have that.

“I hope my colleagues in the Legislature will once again see the benefits to public schools this legislation provides and override this unnecessary veto.”
