Fourth ‘Suspicious’ Fire in Two-week Period Breaks Out Sunday in Konawa

Posted in:

Four abandoned structures in Konawa have gone up in flames over the past two weeks, and authorities say they all may have been started intentionally.

“They are all being investigated as suspicious fires,” said Fire Chief Tim Coffey. “Luckily, they all involved abandoned structures, so there were no injuries.”

The latest building to burn was a former warehouse behind McClure’s on Broadway, just one block north of Main Street. That fire broke out on Sunday and was still smoldering on Monday.

Coffey said the fires are being actively investigated, but help is needed from the public in determining what – or who – started the fires.

“If anyone has information about any of these structure fires, please call authorities,” Coffey said. “You can call the Lighthorse Police, the Konawa Police Department or the County Sheriff. We really need your help with getting to the bottom of this.”

The phone numbers for the agencies mentioned by Coffey are listed at the end of this article.

Coffey added that the Konawa Volunteer Fire Department often has to rely on aid from other crews in the area to respond to local fires.

“We’re a totally volunteer department, and we all have full-time jobs. This tries our manpower at times,’ Coffey said. “Thankfully, we have mutual aid agreements with several fire departments in the area and they are always willing to help. We are very appreciative of them.”
