EMSA Issues First Heat Alert Of Summer On Monday

Posted in:

EMSA paramedics are issuing the first Heat Alert of the summer on Monday and are urging people to use extreme caution when going outside.

EMSA paramedics announced that they responded to six heat-related emergency calls in the Oklahoma City metro area on Sunday.

Heat Alerts are issued when paramedics respond to five or more heat-related illness calls in a 24-hour period.

EMSA says that people should plan for the amount of time they will be outdoors and take the appropriate amounts of water with them.

They say that people should always have a cell phone with them when they go outside in case they need to call 911.

They released the following tips for staying healthy in the heat:

Drink plenty of water or electrolyte drinks hours before and during exposure to the heat

Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing

Do not drink alcohol or caffeine

Don’t limit your air conditioning

Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors

Keep a cell phone on you at all times

EMSA said the Heat Alert will remain in effect until temperatures decrease “substantially.”
