Earthquake Shakes Oklahoma Thursday Morning, Rated 4.0

Posted in:

An earthquake reported early Thursday morning centered near the town of Carney, which is approximately 45 miles northwest of Seminole, was felt in Seminole County and the surrounding area, according to reports that continued to come in during the day.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, earthquake.usgs.gov, the earthquake was reported as 4.0, although local reports placed it between 4.2 to 4.5.

The website’s quake sheet shows there was an earlier 3.2 earthquake at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a series of at least eight quakes reported to be 2.0 or smaller before the Thursday morning 4.0 quake. It was followed by an ongoing series of quakes afterwards that included another 3.2 quake at 4:16 a.m. Thursday. Quakes 2.0 or less are usually not felt by people.

There were no reports of injuries or serious damage.

The Associated Press reported there has been thousands of earthquakes of varying magnitude recorded in Oklahoma during the past decade that have been linked to oil and gas production, particularly the underground injection of wastewater, which is a byproduct of oil and gas production.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, which regulates the oil and gas industry in the state, is sending inspectors to investigate 15 injection wells, spokesperson Matt Skinner told the Associated Press.

“We’ve identified the wells that might be suspect and will audit them,” Skinner said.
