Cromwell Voters Approve OG&E Agreement 11-0

Posted in:

While only a handful of voters turned out on election day, the town of Cromwell has voted to keep Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) as its electrical services provider for the next two and a half decades.

In January, the town’s board of trustees called an election for May 11 to approve or disapprove a 25-year franchise agreement with OG&E, which was up for renewal.

According to the Oklahoma State Election Board, the agreement was approved by a vote of 11-0. All votes were cast in person.

Cromwell is located in northeastern Seminole County and has a population of 286 (2010 census data). The town is named after oilman Joe I. Cromwell, who platted it in 1923.

OG&E, the largest electric utility company in the state, serves more than 850,000 customers in central and western Oklahoma and western Arkansas and has no current wholesale power commitments. The company’s seven power plants are capable of producing about 6,100 mega-watts from fossil fuels. The company also has three wind farms and two small solar farms. In 2017 OG&E generated 54% of its electricity from low-sulfur Wyoming coal and 39 percent from natural gas with the remaining seven percent coming from renewables, mostly wind.
