County Calls Special Election For Tax Extension
Seminole County officials have called a special election for June 8 regarding the extension of a sales tax to fund emergency services in the county, but the date could be pushed back due to an error on the ballot.
The Board of County Commissioners recently approved a resolution for the election, which proposes extending the current quarter-cent sales tax through the end of 2026, 40 percent of which is divided equally between the county’s eight fire departments. But on a ballot received this week by many residents who vote by mail, only seven fire departments are listed, including Bowlegs, Cromwell, Konawa, Maud, Sasakwa, Strother and Wewoka. Seminole does not appear on the list.
According to County Clerk Valarie Houge, the omission was a clerical error, and the Seminole Fire Department was included in the resolution passed by the commissioners.
“It was an error, and we are aware of it,” Houge said on Friday. “I reached out to the District Attorney’s office for counsel, and they will get back to me on Monday. We may be good to go with the June 8 election with the ballot as is, or we could end up moving it to August. Either way, the Seminole Fire Department would receive its portion of the tax revenue.”
The ballot consists of two propositions. In addition to the fire department proposal, voters will be asked to approve apportioning 32.5 percent of the tax revenue as follows: 3.75 percent to the Konawa Ambulance Service, 20.39 percent to the Seminole Ambulance Service and 8.36 percent to the Wewoka Ambulance Service.
