Charges Filed On Man Hurt While Eluding Police in April
A Henryetta man faces multiple charges in connection to an April incident in which he was injured when a vehicle attempting to elude law enforcement officers lost control and wrecked.
Charges filed Wednesday, Sept. 1 against Michael Terrell, 35, in the District Court of Seminole County include one felony count of grand larceny, one felony count of aggravated endangering others while attempting to elude police officer, and one misdemeanor count of possession of controlled and dangerous substance. Edward Dion Watkins, 43, Pryor, previously received the same charges for his involvement in the April incident.
According to the affidavit for arrest filed in this case, on Sunday, April 11, law enforcement was notified that a white male wearing grey sweatpants and a blue shirt had allegedly stolen items from the Seminole Walmart. Seminole Police Corporal Gabriel Wind and Lieutenant Brad Mason began searching for a vehicle, described as a tan Lincoln with front end damage, the alleged suspects were in, which left the store and headed west on Wrangler.
Seminole County Sheriff’s Deputy Kendra Goodwin reported she had located a vehicle matching that description going west at the intersection of Milt Phillips and Wrangler. When Deputy Goodwin attempted to pull the vehicle over, it instead accelerated, beginning a pursuit that ignored all stop signs and red lights. When Deputy Goodwin gave the tag number on the tan Lincoln, they came back as belonging to a 2004 Jeep.
Corporal Wind was east bound on Wrangler when he observed the vehicle with a white male wearing a white hat driving with Deputy Goodwin coming up behind with emergency lights activated. He turned around and joined the chase as it turned south on John Street at a high rate of speed, continuing south on Smith Street and then heading east when it reached the T on Van Street. After making the short jog on Coolidge Street the vehicle continued east on Van. The vehicle turned south once more when it reached the T at University and continued at speeds of up to 80 mph. When it reached Strother Avenue the vehicle turned west and traveled two blocks before turning north on Jefferson and returning back to Van Street. When the vehicle reached the T it traveled one block west on Van before turning south on Eureka, where Corporal Logan Gray tried to set up a road block. The vehicle accelerated and almost struck Gray’s unit head on. Returning to Strother, the vehicle turned left and raced eastbound, running a red light at Milt Phillips, and continued eastbound out of city limits on EW 123. Near 35964 on EW 123 the driver lost control and wrecked the vehicle.
Officers surrounded the vehicle with their side arms drawn and gave commands to have the suspect exit the vehicle. A white male, identified as Edward Dion Watkins, exited the passenger side stating he wasn’t the one driving and that his friend took off running into the woods, the affidavit states. He was placed in hand restraints and patted down while he continued to talk. After being told to be quiet numerous times, he was finally read his Miranda rights by Corporal Gray, according to the affidavit.
Watkins was placed in Corporal Gray’s unit.
During an inventory of the vehicle, the affidavit states a computer matching the one that had been reported stolen was found. Along with the tools that were found outside the store, the total estimate value of allegedly stolen merchandise was $1,801.72
Multiple scales were also found in the vehicle, along with a clear plastic bag of green leafy substance, a green bottle containing a green leafy substance, and a clear plastic bag of crystalline substance, all in the front seat, the affidavit states.
When officers checked the back seat, they discovered a white male wearing grey sweatpants and a blue shirt, later identified as Michael Terrell, laying halfway in the trunk of the vehicle. After he was removed from the vehicle EMS was notified that Terrell was breathing but not responding to commands.
Terrell was transported be EMS to Seminole ER, where he was next mediflighted to OU in Oklahoma City. Watkins was checked and cleared by EMS before being transported to Seminole city jail.
