A Wewoka man faces a felony charge after he allegedly took jewelry from a Wewoka pawn shop.

According to documents filed in the District Court of Seminole County on Jan. 19, 2023, Burl Thomas Randall III, 58, has been charged with one felony count of Larceny of Merchandise From Retailer.

The probable cause affidavit for this case states that at approximately 6:30 p.m. on December 2, 2022, Wewoka Police Sgt. Travis Ellis was dispatched to a Wewoka pawn shop for a possible burglary.

Upon arrival Sgt. Ellis spoke with an employee who explained she noticed something was missing from one of the display cases as she was closing up for the day. She and a few other employees watched footage from the day and observed a black male in a light brown coat and blue jeans standing at the display case close to the doors.

The employees stated they observed him in the video allegedly reaching over the counter and taking a case of jewelry out of the case and walking out of the store.

When Sgt. Ellis reviewed the video, he observed the male walking into the store and standing in front of the display case. The male is then seen reaching over the counter and taking a pin out of the slot to hold the sliding door closed, according to the affidavit. The male is then seen looking around before leaning over the counter, sliding the door open and reaching into the case. After looking around the store again, the male allegedly reached into the display case and took out a case of jewelry. He placed the case under his jacket and walked out the door, the affidavit states. After leaving the building the video show him enter the passenger seat of a black SUV.

On December 7 Sgt. Ellis obtained footage from the incident. He also provided with Randall’s name as a potential suspect of interest. He was also provided with an itemized list of the jewelry that was taken. The felony information stated jewelry taken included forty-two rings with an approximate value of $10,000.

In a separate case filed in the District Court of Seminole County on January 12, 2023, documents show Burl Thomas Randall III was charged with: one count of Driving a Motor Vehicle While Under Influence of Alcohol; one count of Failure to Maintain Insurance or Security; and one count of Driving Under Suspension.

An out of state driver’s license that was not in his name and could not produce any form of insurance paperwork for the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Sgt. Ellis states in the affidavit that, as they talked, he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Randall. Asked if he had been drinking or had any drink before being stopped, Randall stated he didn’t have anything to drink and he doesn’t drink anymore.

Randall was asked to step out of the vehicle, and the affidavit states he had to use his walker to get around. The report gives the details of the Horizontal Gaze Nystragmus portion of the Field Sobriety Test, adding that the remainder of the test was not conducted “due to the inability to complete due to disability and unable to stand on own two feet.”
