Bice Picks up Challenger For Congressional Seat

Posted in:

An attorney and former television reporter announced this week that she is looking to unseat U.S. Representative Stephanie Bice in congressional district five, which includes Seminole County.

Abby Broyles, who ran an unsuccessful campaign last year for Sen. Jim Inhofe’s seat, announced Wednesday that she plans to challenge Bice in the 2022 election. Broyles, a democrat, reportedly filed her declaration of candidacy on Tuesday.

“Bethany is my hometown,” Broyles said in a news release. “I was dis gusted listening to Bice more passionate about looking out for the January 6th mob that attacked our Capitol than looking out for the people of this district.”

Broyles, 31, graduated from Bethany High School and, according to her official website, graduated college in two-and-a-half years and began working as a journalist at the age of 20. She spent the majority of her television career at the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City.

Broyles’ website states that her priorities include pay equity and economic security, protecting healthcare and fighting COVID, criminal justice reform, education, and decriminalizing marijuana.

The fifth district congressional seat was held by Steve Russell, a former soldier in the U.S. Army credited with aiding in the capture of Saddam Hussein, from 2015 – 2019. Russell was unseated by Kendra Horn in the November 2018 election. Horn, who ran on the democratic ticket, lost the seat to Bice in 2020.

The election is slated for Nov. 8, 2022. The primary is scheduled for June 28 and a primary runoff is scheduled for August 23.
