Annual Beef Auction Thursday, March 2
The Annual Seminole County 4H/FFA Banquet and Beef Auction is open to the public, and will be held this Thursday, March 2, at the Reynolds Wellness Center, 1001 Strother Avenue, starting at 6:30 p.m. This event gives the public an informative overview of how beef quality is determined and what to look for when purchasing beef. Afterwards, they will have a rare chance to purchase beef that is of a much higher quality than is normally found in most supermarkets.
Each purchase helps support this program that gives Seminole County 4-H and FFA students a hands-on learning experience that provides a realistic view of the cattle industry. The students learn about how to properly select, feed, and care for a feeder steer, as well as the expenses that are involved.
The Seminole County Cattlemen’s Association plays an important part in making this program the success it has become. This includes furnishing the calves that were all born on a Seminole County Cattleman’s farm and raised by the students. Under the student’s care, the steers are fed a grain(See based ration for 160 days prior to slaughter, and the students closely monitor and maintain accurate records of their progress. These records help the cattlemen improve their methods and strategies, which benefits everyone that enjoys beef.
After slaughter, the participating students tour the state licensed processing facility for a close, first-hand view of carcass grading and selection.
Thursday evening will begin with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. The records kept by the students as well as their beef’s grade will be available for potential bidders to review. Following the meal students that participated will be recognized, and various awards will be presented for a number of accomplishments, included record keeping, best average daily gain, and much more.
After the overview on beef judging, the auction will kick off. The winning bidder will can choose to purchase the whole beef or half a beef. They can also decide how they would prefer the beef to be processed and packaged.
This event is sponsored by the Seminole County OSU Extension office, and is an excellent opportunity to learn how to make better choices when shopping for beef, and possibly fill up your freezer with top quality meat.
