American Legion Honors Late Veteran by Flying Special Flag in Downtown District
American Legion Post 204 is honoring deceased veteran David C.R. Fletcher by flying a special flag in his honor at Veterans Park in downtown Seminole. The flag began flying July 1 and will fly the entire month.
Fletcher was born Oct. 30, 1940 in Maud to Robert “Buck” and Bertha Fletcher. He had three brothers, Joe, Verlin and Joel, and two sisters, Bernice Stalnaker and Sherry Hillburn. He married Colleen in January 1966 and together they raised three sons, Terry, Steven and Robert.
Fletcher graduated from Maud High School in 1959, where he played football and counted Bill Garner and Billy Freeman as close friends. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965, beginning with basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas. Fletcher was later stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and served as a truck driver, fire stoker (heater equipment) and in the 101 st Airborne Division. He received awards for good conduct and was discharged on Aug. 17, 1965.
Upon his discharge from the military, Fletcher worked in the oilfield and construction industries then went to work for Oklahoma Gas and Electric, where he retired in 1994. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Maud. Fletcher passed away on May 23, 1995.
The local American Legion Post, under the command of Carl Odom, honors a different veteran each month by flying a flag in their honor. Veterans Park is located on Main Street next to the Municipal Building.
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization and focuses on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities.
