American Legion to Honor a Fallen Veteran Each Month

Posted in:

Members of the Seminole American Legion announced plans to honor a different fallen veteran each month, beginning in June.

The Legion will fly a special flag at Veteran’s Park in downtown Seminole for a full month, starting on June 1. A new veteran will be selected each month, as the post has announced plans to continue the program indefinitely. Recognizing fallen veterans is part of a national effort by the American Legion to bring awareness to local fallen service members. Other posts around the country are also flying flags to honor the fallen.

Grayson Atchison is the first veteran to be honored. Atchison was an Air Force medic and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He passed away on April 24, 2020, at 77 years old. Atchison was a longtime Seminole resident and a member of the Seminole Public Library Board, where he initiated the Adult Literacy Program. He was also a Mason, a regular volunteer at local food banks and was known to pass out Bibles to anyone that did not have one of their own.

All veterans that have passed away are eligible to be honored by the Legion. To nominate a veteran, please contact Post Commander Carl Odom at (405) 380-4615.
