From the Files of The Seminole Producer

Posted in:

March 18, 1935

Mayor Harber’s lead increased steadily this afternoon and stood at approximately 200 over Chester Gates when The Producer made its last cheek of all city boxes shortly after 3 o’clock. Jake Sims’ victory over his three opponents seemed assured. A.J. Agnew had a long lead in the street commissioner race.

Today’s election is the hottest city election Seminole has ever had, in the opinion of those who have watched city elections since away back when. Streets have been crowded since early morning. Almost every other car on the street has banners of one sort or another and the crowds around the voting places have been as large as they ordinarily are for a county election.

Headquarters for both candidates for mayor placed watchers on all boxes when the polls opened and many voters were challenged. Some charges of favoritism on the part of election officials had been made and feeling in the campaign stood at a high pitch mid afternoon.

W.A. (Blackie) Smalley, World War I veteran and criminal hanger-on, was to be buried this afternoon at Wewoka. Commander W.J. Remaklus stated today that the records show Smalley convicted of no crimes but do show him to have been a brave soldier, wounded in action.

Attended by great success was the first annual open house sponsored by the board of the city library on Saturday. The affair which celebrated the fifth anniversary of the institution gave the citizens of the community an opportunity to inspect the library and also establish a birthday fund. Mrs. F.H. Wozencraft, president, Mrs. H.R. Cook, Mrs. W.D. Grisso, Mrs. J.B. Allen, Mrs. Esther Sheets and Dr. J.N. Harber received the guests in the library building on West Oak.

Mrs. L.F. Kneeland was most delightfully honored on Saturday evening when former employees of Mr. Kneeland at Sinclair Plant 10 gathered at Plant 13 to celebrate her birthday. Mr. Kneeland presented her with a beautiful cake artistically decorated with pink confectioner’s rosebuds. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Vanatta, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kneeland, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Friend, Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Kneeland and Miss Valma Kneeland.
