The City of Seminole was named Thursday night a City of Merit and placed third following judging in the 13th annual Community Achievement Banquet. Awards were presented to some 21 cities before a near capacity crowd in Oklahoma City’s Myriad Center last night.

Some 65 city residents attended the banquet and saw Seminole win the Merit Award along with Pauls Valley in the 4,000 – 7,999 population category. Top honors, the firstplace award, went to Elk City in the same category while Weatherford placed second.

Seminole and 20 other cities were selected in February to be placed in the finals. There were 57 entries in the contest. Last night’s banquet was the climax of the two months of waiting for the 21 finalists in five group categories.

Winners, runner-up, and certificates of merit were named among cities competing among four other population categories. The placings announced at the awards banquet were: Group I (2,000 or less) – Beaver first place, Mooreland second, and Cities of Merit awards to Carnegie and Hinton.

Group II (2,000-3,999) - Atoka first place, Madill second, Checotah and Chandler, certificates of merit.

Group IV (8,000 – 17,499) – Clinton first place, Woodward second, Broken Arrow and Sapulpa merit winners.

Group V (17,500 and up) – Muskogee first, Lawton second, Shawnee, Enid, and Norman certificates of merit.

Cluttered Corner Camping 20 Stories High By Milt Phillips WE READ KENT RUTH’S STORY in Sunday Oklahoman about the latest innovation in recreation camping. We’ve long been accustomed to the persons who enjoy camping and in recent years the camping we’ve come to know about is really luxurious. Some of the folks on this newspapering hillside are inveterate campers and they have equipment that is rally out-of-thisworld when compared to the creek-bank camping Ye Ole Scribe knew in his younger and camping days. But Kent Ruth, the Gearyite whose travels across the world are most interesting, tells Bout the New Orleans High Rise Camping Grounds. Downtown in New Orleans, and in easy walking distance of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, this planned 20 story high rise camping tower will have daily auto parking on the first eight floor, then the next 12 floors are set aside for your camper. Just drive in, hook up, and live comfortably right downtown in a private “hotel suite,” your own camper. An elevator takes you down to the street and you are in New Orleans and enjoying that scenic old city – or you look out your camper window, 20 stories above the street, and see the ocean, ole Lake Ponchetrain, the Mississippi River and its deltas, and the ships docking at the wharf way below you. Oh boy, that’s real camping. We’ve always explained to our camper-dedicated friends that we love to “rough it” on our vacations – in air-conditioned motel and lake lodge rooms. But if we have a camper, we’d head for New Orleans when that high-rise campground is ready to take customers. Kent didn’t say when the high-rise would be ready, but we’ll ask him next Oklahoma Historical Society session.
