From The Files of The Seminole Producer

The second annual Roosevelt-Central Grade School Science Fair was staged Thursday in the grade school auditorium with nine students nabbing “Outstanding Ribbons” for their science projects and all others earning first, second or third place ribbons. Grace school Principal Keith Shaw said that he was very pleased with this year’s fair, and was happy that 170 students entered the fair. “There was no assignment of anything,” the principal said. “If the students wanted to enter they could.

“We have several good science students here, and all of the projects were made by the students without help from their teachers or their parents.”

Judges from the fair were Bob Trammell, Seminole Junior College science department chairman; Clarence Dill, and SJC science instructor, and Phillip Parks, city pharmacist.

Outstanding and first place ribbon winners will advance to the Regional Grade School Science Fair, which will be held at Seminole Junior College March 30-31. Many science students from area grade schools are expected to enter projects in the SJC fair.

This is the second year for the Roosevelt-Central fair. Principal Shaw started the project last year for fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students at Roosevelt- Central.

Science projects entered by students in the fair ranged from rockets to plant experiments. Contestants were judged on the scope of their projects, the way they described their projects and how neat the projects were constructed and presented.

It was pointed out by the judges that it doesn’t take much money to construct a firwt place projects. One first place project was titled “an automatic fire extinguisher,” and was constructed of four bricks, a tin can and a candle.

The fourth grade science student punched holes in the bottom of the tin can and then placed wax into the holes to seal them. The bricks were then stacked around the candle and the can sat over the candle, supported by the bricks.

Water was placed into the can and when the candle melted the wax and the water poured out of the holes in the can and extinguished the candle’s flame.

The judges did have quite a scare at one point during their judging.

At a large space rocket display, one of the judges turned on the ignition switch on a rocket and it took off with a boom, hit the ceiling of the auditorium, ricocheted off and hit a curtain rod, where it lodged spraying smoke and fire from its engine section.

In a matter of seconds the rocket burned all of its fuel and ended its life with a loud explosion. After the judges stopped laughing and came out from their hiding places, it was decided that the science student who built the rocket should be warned never to have a rocket loaded for “blast-off” when on display because of safety reasons. The student was awarded a second place ribbon for his project.

The judges all indicated they were amazed at some of the ingenuous science projects. All three noted that there must be a strong science program at the grade school for such projects to be developed and for such a number of students to participate in the fair.
