Central District of Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs sponsored a junior music festival on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Saturday. Mrs. Ivan Potts, district chairman, was assisted in making arrangements for the festival by Mr. Clair McGavern of the OBU Music Department. There were 239 entries in various divisions including piano, clarinet, violin, pipe organ and musicianship.

Ranging from pre-primary to senior concertos, student ratings were based as Superior, Excellent, Very Good, Good and Fair. Each student was required to play two numbers from memory, one by an American composer and one by a foreign composer.

There were 106 “superior” ratings earned by participants from cities in the Central district including El Reno, Holdenville Norman, Shawnee, Oklahoma City, Edmond, Yukon and Seminole.

Thirteen students receiving a rating of “high superior” were eligible for playoff competition. The two winners chosen from these play-offs and included Kelly Parks of Seminole and an alternate, Vicki Coates, also of Seminole, both students of Mrs. Howard Carlton and members of Chopin Junior Music Club.

Fifty-two students from Seminole participating in the festival representing three Junior Music clubs: Bach sponsored by Mrs. Pauline K. Dean; Schumann sponsored by Mrs. Potts; and Chopin whose sponsor is Mrs. Carlton.

Receiving “superior” ratings from the Schumann Club were Rocky Weems, Kathy Mendenhall, David Hooten, Mark Hooten, Michael Hooten, Kim Estes, Tes Holliman, Candas Shaw, Tanya Jackson, Pricilla Morgan, Jeanette Hargis, Nancy Randolph, Kathaleen White, Laurie White, Susanne White, Melody Melton, Sonia Gunter, Lori Lisenbery, Nancy Wall, Amy Wall and Melinda Flatt; And from the Chopin, Carol Cooper, Michelle Sheppard, Cathy Cooper, Nova Dawn Sheppard, Cheryl Moss, Marsha Mills, Amy Bishop, Kelly Parks, Chuck Anderson, and Vicki Coates; And, from Bach, Cynthia Parrish and Toni Curry; Recipient of “excellent plus” rating was Shirley McCormick of Bach Club; and “excellent” were Judy Poplin, Mariann Waddell, Judy Wilson, Jamie Wall, Todd Waddell, and Terri Turner, all of Schumann; Terri Mardin, Brenda Kistler, Max Dyck, Sharite Kistler, Melissa Seebeck and Lu Ann Graham, all of Bach Club; and from Chopin, Cathy Cooper, Nova Sheppard, Kelly Parks, Chuck Anderson and Vicki Coates took part in the play offs. It was in this section that Kelly Parks was chosen a winner and will enter state competition in April and Vicki Coates was selected as an alternate.

“Very good” ratings went to Lisa Davis and Debbie Tanner, both of Schumann Club; Nora McDonald of Bach; and LaDawn Mize of Bach received a rating of “good.”

After three “superior” ratings are received by a young artist, a Gold Cup is issued. A second Gold Cup was received by Cathy Cooper, Cheryl Moss and Vicki Coates and Kelly Parks received her third Gold Cup.

Several of Mrs. Dean’s students will receive Gold Cups and students of Mrs. Potts who will be receiving Gold Cups at the 21st annual Junior State Convention in Oklahoma City, April 14, include Nancy Randolph, Melody Melton, Mariann Waddell, Lori Lisenbery, Jamie Wall and Michael Hooten. Michael also will receive his Gold Pin for his third consecutive year of earning a “superior” rating.

Parents and friends accompanying Seminole students from the Schumann Club were Mesdames Bill Weems, Kenneth Mendenhall, Bill Hooten, Wayne Estes, Duncan Holliman, Keith Shaw, Melvin Hargis, Jack Randolph, R. O. Melton, Herbert Gunter, Willard Lisenbery, J. B. Flatt, LeRoy Poplin, Norman Waddell, Herman Wilson, Raymond Turner, Bill Davis, Mr. and Mrs. David Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel White and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Tanner.

Mrs. Dean assisted at the registration table. Mrs. Potts as district chairman and nine OBU music majors acted as monitors for the festival. -oOo Slants – School students being delighted that today is district teachers’ meeting day and no classes are being held… SHS debaters taking advantage of the holiday with a fund raising carwash to raise money to attend a debate tournament in Washington… The debaters will also be washing cars tomorrow, weather permitting at Whitten’s car lot on Milt Phillips Ave. and the cars will be picked up and delivered by calling 3821810… AL Elrod informing a reporter about a story… E. J. (Goofy) Atkins telling the “worst” of the troubles he had when Mrs. Atkins’ wrists (both) were broken from a fall on the ice in their Boulder, Colorado, home... Bob Pointer being teased about his “rattlesnake skin” britches.
