The Seminole High School debate team has been invited to what is considered to be the most outstanding speech tournament in the nation, Andy Overmon, SHS debate coach said today.
Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. has invited Jan Poplin, Regie Whitten, Randy Calhoun, Neal Martin and Billy Sparks to participate in their invitational speech and debate tournament March 17-30. The invitations are extended to debate teams that have demonstrated outstanding ability throughout the year. Even though Seminole High was considered too small a school to compete in Class A debate, special permission was granted to participate in that category and last year the team of Randy Calhoun and Regie Whitten won second place in the State of Oklahoma and Miss Poplin also placed high in the state competition. This year, the debaters have won the last six tournaments attended.
Normally, transportation costs to and from debate tournaments are paid by the school, Overmon said, and the student’s parents pay the food and lodging costs. However, due to the cost of plane fare to and from Washington, the school and parents can’t meet the expenses. So, the debate team is attempting to raise sufficient funds at the concession stand at the basketball games tonight and Saturday night, Overmon stated. Area residents are urged to attend the games and support the trip through the concession stand.
Persons may also contribute to the trip fund by sending contributions to Seminole High School, in care of Andy Overmon.
Overmon estimated that some $1,000 would be needed for the trip to Washington.
