WASHINGTON (UPI) The White House says President Nixon has not changed his campaign position that he will “never” grant amnesty to Vietnam War draft dodgers and deserters.
Ronald L. Ziegler, Nixon’s press secretary, was asked Tuesday what was Nixon’s position in light of the Vietnam cease-fire.
“Our position has not changed,” Ziegler said.
Nixon took a hard line position on the issue during last fall’s presidential campaign.
“Don’t worry about that amnesty – never,” Nixon told an Ohio couple who had lost a son in the war.
The statement contrasted with a position Nixon took on a television interview in January 1972. At that time, Nixon said he expected he would be “very liberal in regard to amnesty.”
It is estimated there are about 500 draft resisters and deserters serving jail terms in the United States and perhaps as many as 70,000 others in exile in other countries.
An aide said Monday that Sen. Robert A. Taft Jr., R-Ohio, is contemplating re-introducing legislation that would provide at least a partial amnesty. Taft has suggested letting deserters come back home if they agree to spend time in the military or public service.
Taft, who generally is a supporter of Nixon, introduced similar legislation in the last session of Congress, but it did not pass. -oOo County Deputies and Wewoka Police have recovered all but 17 cents taken in a daring burglary of the court clerk’s office and assistant district attorney’s office Monday night while Wewoka police in the Sheriff’s office were only a few feet away.
Police found almost all merchandise taken in the burglary stashed in an alley in Wewoka Tuesday evening. Only 17 cents in change was still missing today.
Although no arrests have been made as of yet in connection with the break in, police said they are checking on a suspect.
Entry into the offices was gained by the burglar standing on a bench and climbing through an open transom. The offices are located down the hall and a floor above the Sheriff’s office, which is opened all night now that the Wewoka Police Department is also working out of the office.
Wewoka police said they did not hear or see anyone inside the courthouse. Besides the door which goes by the Sheriff’s office on the bottom floor of the courthouse two other doors at the courthouse are also left open and the burglar could have entered through one of them.
The culprit ransacked the desks in the court clerk and assistant DA’s offices. T.G. Harrison, court clerk, said some $75 in postage stamps, a letter opener and an old wristwatch was all that was missing out of his office.
Bill Biggers, assistant DA, said a roll of postage stamps, 17 cents in change and a transistor radio and stereo unit which was being stored in the evidence room of the office were stolen.
Police recovered all merchandise but the 17 cents. One DA employee found a St. Christopher’s medal, which was believed to have belonged to the burglar, on the edge of the transom Tuesday morning. -oOo The Henryetta Fighting Hens were just what their names implies here Tuesday night as they fought on the backboards and in the air to slash the Seminole Chieftains, 61-49, in a Star Conference contest.
