From The Files of The Seminole Producer

Seminole has been selected as the site of the Oklahoma tennis Association’s first summer tournament, which will be held May 25-28, it was announced today.

The Seminole Open Juniors Tournament, which will be hosted by the Seminole Optimists Club, will be conducted jointly with the Shawnee Open Seniors Tournament, also set for May 25-28.

Last year, Shawnee staged both the senior and junior tournaments, but this year Seminole tennis patrons submitted a bid for the junior tournament and the request was approved by the Association.

Seminole in past years hosted the full tournament (both junior and senior divisions). In 1970, however, Seminole gave the tournament to Shawnee after a sponsor for the meet could not be found.

The Optimist Club agreed to sponsor this year’s meet and will supply personnel to conduct the meet, Charles Steinman, Optimist committee chairman, said.

Keith Marshall, a longtime Seminole tennis patron, will serve as the tournament’s referee and Mike Rose, head tennis coach at Seminole High Top Headline – 2 Jet Hijackers Give Up In Texas; 3 Hostages Freed Two hijackers, one an Ethiopian citizen, surrendered today to a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent at a small airport south of Houston about 22 hours after they had commandeered a National Airlines jet while it was going from Philadelphia to New York. The jetliner blew out its tires landing at the small airfield.

F.B.I. officials reported that the ransom obtained by the hijackers—$500,000 in American money and 20,000 Mexican pesos, which is the equivalent of $1,600—had been recovered.

The rear ramp of the Boeing 727, a plane that is a favorite target for parachuting hijackers, suddenly dropped down at about 4 P.M., Central daylight time (5 P.M. New York time), and three stewardesses being held as hostages descended. They were followed by the two hijackers, who held their hands over their heads. Agents confiscated a shotgun II and a .22‐ calibeipistol.

The two men were identified by the F.B.I. as Michael Stanley Green, 33 years old, of Washington and Lulseged Tesfa, 22, an Ethiopian. They were handcuffed and driven to Houston for arraignment on air‐piracy charges before School, will be the assistant referee.

Tournament officials are expecting 150 contestants to enter the meet. Entry blanks will be sent out in March, Marshall said.

“The tournament has always paid for itself,” Marshall, who has been instrumental in conducting numerous tennis meets her in past years, said. “We’ve always drawn a large number of contestants.

“The Oklahoma tennis Association stages a number of meets each summer and top tennis players throughout the state make each tournament on the tour.

“We will send entry blanks to over 600 athletes, who are members of the Oklahoma Tennis Association. Out of that number probably 150 or 200 will enter and some of these persons will be from out of state.”

Marshall said the Shawnee tournament and the Seminole meet have scheduled their events jointly where 18-year-old players in the Seminole tournament can also compete in the younger divisions of the Shawnee meet.

For example, he explains, the younger divisions of the Shawnee tournament are scheduled for the morning hours and the Seminole tournament’s 18-year-old play is slated for the afternoon.

“There won’t be many athletes compete in both tournaments, but those who want to can,” he said. “Many families will compete in both tournaments with the youngsters playing here and the adults at Shawnee.”

Divisions in the Seminole meet will include 12-yearolds, 14-year-olds, 16-yearolds, and 18-year-olds, and 18-year-old singles and doubles. Boys and girls alike will be able to compete in the tournament.

Shawnee will have 30-year-olds, 40-year-olds, 45-year-olds, 55-year-olds singles and doubles. Along with these divisions will be an adults open division which will allow the 18-yearolds and up to compete.

Entry fees are set by the Oklahoma Tennis Association.

Marshall said the tournament will be a big boost to the Seminole economy. “These people will be her for a weekend, will eat in Seminole cafes and stay in local motels,” he stated. “Also, there will be top tennis players here from across the state and area tennis fans are welcome to watch the tournament. There will be no admission charge.”

The Seminole tournament will be conducted on the Seminole High School courts and the Roosevelt- Central courts. Marshall said the high school courts are being resurfaced and repaired by the school and the courts at Roosevelt-Central will be repainted, have new nets installed, and will be cleaned.

“Seminole is a large enough city to stage this summer tournament and the Optimist Club is doing a great community service by sponsoring the meet,” said Marshall.

Marshall also urged that any area tennis fans wishing to compete in the tournament will be more than welcome to do so. -oOo Slants – Al Rollins commenting about a Producer story… Coach Gene Hawk being unhappy… Fiddler Everett Stubbs getting ready for Saturday night… Murl Long being welcomed back to Seminole… Mrs. Odell Bolin hoping she can find the owner of an aluminum cake pan left in her mailbox… She’s sure someone left a nice pan there by mistake. -oOo -School Daze – Two practice teachers at Seminole High School are Mrs. Laura Rose and Miss Becky Bishop.
