LOUISVILLE – A husky AWOL soldier, who shot up the airport terminal here and held a mechanic hostage for six hours aboard an airliner, was captured Saturday when a policewoman yanked him down the entrance ramp as he attempted to help her aboard.

Dustin V. Durkin, of Pittsburgh, who was stationed at nearby Fort Knox, was sent sprawling on the runway by Martha (Marty) Greene, 35, a 5’6” policewoman posing as an airline stewardess.

While the siege was in progress, Trans World Airlines said it received a call that $25,000 be placed in a bag in downtown Louisville or “several people will be killed.” It had not been determined if the incidents were related.

Durkin walked into the terminal at Standiford Field about 9:30 p.m. Friday, pulled a 12-guage sawedoff shotgun from his duffle bag and began blasting windows, doors, and the ceiling.

He then left the terminal and spotted David Yaeckel, 46, working on an Ozark Airlines DC9.

Durkin forced Yaeckel onto the plane and shouted to authorities that he wanted another plane to make a trans-Atlantic flight and a woman companion. He also threatened several times to blow up the plane.

Mrs. Green, a former airline stewardess, made five trips to the airplane, bringing Durkin a bag of food at one point, before getting close enough to grab his hand and yank him down the entrance ramp. When he hit the runway he was pounced on by several police officers.

At each trip to the plane, Mrs. Greene was covered by spotlights and law enforcement officers covered the plane’s door with high-powered rifles.

“She did the bravest thing I’ve seen in many years,” said Louisville Police Chief Edgar Paul.

Yaeckel said he was afraid at first but “after talking with him a while I lost my fear and saw he was just a disturbed kid.

“I don’t think he really started out with the idea of hijacking a plane,” he said. “I believe this boy is disturbed and just wanted to make the news.”

Police announced Saturday they had arrested four persons in connection with the extortion threat.

The first suspect was arrested when he went to a mail box in front of the city library where the money was supposed to be placed in a brown paper bag.

Police had the site under surveillance when two persons showed up at the mail box.

One man was captured after a bullet punctuated chase. The other three were arrested later Saturday. Police refused to divulge any more information pertaining to the arrests. -oOo School Daze – Over the past weekend the debate team went to a tournament at Jesuit in Dallas, Texas. TOKYO – (UPI) The Japanese government refused an entry visa to leader Mick Jaggar Friday, forcing cancellation of a tour of Japan by the Rolling Stones rock group.

The Ministry of Justice denied Jagger a visa under a Japanese law barring aliens who have been convicted of narcotics offenses in foreign countries.

Justice Ministry spokesmen said it was based on Jagger having been fined for possession of marijuana in Britain in 1971.

“We are likely to suffer a tremendous loss of money,” said Seijiro Udo, president of Udo Artists Inc., which was promoting the Rolling Stones’ tour.
