April 27, 1971
Louis Joe Anson, residing east of city, reported to police Monday night that a wheel and tire was stolen from his pickup truck while it was parked at the Tri-City Lanes on Highway 270 East. Anson said the theft occurred between 7:15 and 11 p.m. while he was inside bowling. The wheel was white and the tire was an 8.15 x 15 Goodyear mudgrip. Anson discovered the tire and wheel missing when he left the lanes at 11 p.m. to drive home.
A Seminole high school student and Strother lass were two winners in the Varnum high school rodeo held Friday and Saturday night at the Seminole Rodeo Arena. The rodeo was staged by the Varnum Junior Class and all proceeds made off the rodeo will be used to stage the Varnum junior-senior banquet which will be held on May 7.
Skip McBride of Seminole won $76.13 when he placed first in the bronc riding. Debra Rich of Strother won $21 when she placed first in the Junior barrel racing division.

Co-Chairman Al Burgess and Jim Moreu of the Chamber’s Clean-Up, Paint-Up committee, said this morning they were pleased with the amount of work residents did over the weekend to get the week’s campaign off to a good start…City trucks were busy yesterday and today picking up the accumulations which had been placed at street curbs…Those that weren’t picked up today will be gotten by city crews later… Chamber manager Bob Jones commenting that this “Clean-Up” week always brings along a rain some time during the period, and we got one Monday night… The regional golf tournament Monday at Seminole Municipal links drawing a large crowd of spectators… Seminole Junior College President Elmer Tanner reminding all area high school seniors that summer session enrollments are now being taken…Complete details available at the college office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and while night classes are in session, Monday through Thursday…J. Barstow Gilkey hoping for a good turnout of Maud residents tonight at a meeting to organize a Civil-Defense Unit there…
For the third straight year the Bowlegs high school Bison band under the direction of Tom Flora will travel Wednesday to Enid and participate in the 39 th Annual Tri-State Music Festival. The festival will be held on April 28, 29, 30 and May 1.
Last year the band won two awards – the Outstanding Concert Band award and the Sweepstakes award.
A former Seminole area resident and graduate of Strother high school, Mr. Gerald R. Lane of Pascagoula, Mississippi, has purchased his fifth car dealership in the south. His latest purchase was at Gonzales, Louisiana.
Mr. Lane is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Lane who still reside in the Strother community. The car dealer moved to Louisiana in 1957 and acquired his first business in 1966.
Since that time, he has continued to grow and expand with dealerships in Bay St. Louis, Pascagoula and Lucedale, Mississippi and Gonzales, Louisiana.
