Social Security Increases Will Come On June 3
First checks to include the new 10 percent monthly benefit increase authorized in legislature acted upon this week by Congress will reach 26 million social security beneficiaries on June 3. Robert M. Ball, Commissioner of Social Security, said that the regular June 3 checks covering benefits for the month of May will reflect the new higher monthly amount. Separate checks, scheduled to reach beneficiaries later in June will cover the amount of the increase for the months of January through April.

Annual 4-H Craft Show Winners Are Announced Monday
Winners in the Annual 4-H Craft Show which was held Friday and Saturday in the Civic Center at Wewoka were announced Monday by the County Extension Office. On exhibit at the show were 96 Home Improvements items, 72 woodworking, and 84 craft exhibits.

Strother Nine Opens Play Friday
Strother will have Varnum in their firing sights Friday when they open their 1971 Spring baseball season in a 2 p.m. game against the Varnum Whippets on the Whippet’s home diamond. Coach Don Hardwick, of Strother, has some 13 boys out for baseball and four of these players are seniors. Strother didn’t win any games out of five starts in their fall baseball campaign, but Coach Hardwick is hoping to remedy that this spring.

Mark Finley hammered out a five-over-par 77 in strong and gusty winds Wednesday at the Shawnee Elks Club to lead the Shawnee Wolves to a 23-stroke victory over the Seminole Chieftains golf team.
