MRS. SULLIVAN ENTERTAINS CULTURE CLUB

Mrs. Ada Sullivan was a hostess when Self Culture club was entertained on Monday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Roger Oliver, 405 Douglas. Mrs. Gene Bradbury presided.

The club collect was led by Mrs. Chester Gates. The business session included routine reports. Final plans were made for the annual Honor Roll tea.

A report was made on Mrs. Frank Wozencraft, charter member who is ill. Roll call was answered with assigned topics.

Mrs. Bradbury introduced as program leader, Mrs. Ralph Clarkson whose discussion subject was “Washington D.C., our Nation’s Capital.” She gave an interesting travelogue and showed pictures of all the points of interest including the Smithsonian Institute, National Cemetery, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Monument, White House, Mt. Vernon, International Market, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the statue memorializing the flag raising on Iwo Jima.

She told of attending the Foundry Methodist church and explained why it was named for the man on whose land was located a foundry during Revolutionary War days. His land was threatened by confiscation of property and he vowed that, if spared, he would build a church on the property, which he did.

Informal visiting was enjoyed during the social hour.

Those present, not yet named, were Miss Mauttie Hofmeister, Miss Myrtle Burnett, Mesdames Janie Adair, G.P. Merrell Sr., Harold Morris, Guy Rhodes and Milt Phillips.

GH 4-H Club Entertained Varnum Homemakers entertained members of Good Hope 4-H club at a party Tuesday evening at the school. Twenty-four members were in attendance.

Directing games were Mrs. H. D. Laxton and Mr. and Mrs. W. G. McComb. Refreshments were served By Mrs. E. Evans, Mrs. Ida Cavender, Mrs. H.F. Laxton, Mrs. Claire Howard and Mrs. Jesse Earles and daughter Ruth.

Teachers present were Miss Pamela Davis, Mrs. M. Bowman and Mr. Herb Gunter.

SCHOOL DAZE

Debaters and contest speakers will be attending Southwestern State college debate tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 19-20. Mr. Bob Dukes, speech and debate coach, will accompany the students.

Going in debate will be a team composed of Anthony Allen and Phil Spurrier. Also going in debate will be Marilyn Moran and Paula Ihle.

Entered in Women’s extemporaneous speaking are Marilyn Moran and Paula Ihle. Entered in men’s extemporaneous speaking are Phil Spurrier and Anthony Allen.

Randy Strayhorn and Diana Drake are entered in poetry interpretation. Ronnie Heath is entered in original oratory. Entered in standard oratory are Matt Martin and Ronnie Heath.

Randy Strayhorn and Diana Drake are entered in humorous duet. Entered in dramatic duet are Jan Poplin and Linda Young.

Leslie Love Marks Eleventh Birthday

The observance of the 11th birthday of Leslie Love, his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Love entertained at a party recently at her home, 8001/2 North Second.

Games were played and refreshments were served. Favors were bubble gum and balloons. Leslie opened an array of gifts. Assisting with the hostess duties was Mrs. Lena Estep.

Attending were Jimmy Norris, Mike Price, Donavan Prewitt, Ronnie and Diane Franklin, Christine and Regina Camp, Ida Mae Hopkins and Mrs. Flora Vaughn.

Sending gifts were Kenny Prewitt, Dean Welch, and Mrs. Norma Edwards.
