Fred Calaway Jr. of 924 Spurr, Seminole, has been elected to membership in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph, Mo., Lloyd D. Miller, executive secretary, announced this week.

There were 346 memberships issued to breeders of registered Aberdeen – Angus in the United States during the past month.

A speaker who said frankly he is “in sympathy with Governor David Hall, and with his problems,” lashed what he termed “special interests of Oklahoma” Thursday in the monthly Forum luncheon of Seminole Chamber of Commerce and civic clubs.

James C. Nance, Purcell publisher and former member and leader in both the House and Senate of the Oklahoma legislature, was the speaker.

Pointing to hypothetical actions which he would take if he were governor of Oklahoma, the frank and candid former legislator listed many taxing proposals he would espouse, “not while I was running, but when I got in” the governor’s chair.

Pinpointing specific business and industry which he now thinks should bear a heavier share of the tax burdens of the state, Nance pointed to the insurance industry, the trucking industry, banking, building, and loan functions, utilities, gas and oil production and “wealthy taxpayers” who escape taxation by buying tax-exempt bond and stocks.

Refreshments were served upon arrival of guests when Mrs. T. M. Barber, Highway 9 West, entertained Seminole Federated Music club Tuesday evening. Mrs. Howard Carlton was presiding officer. The collect was repeated in unison and led by mrs. Pauline K. Dean.

Mrs. J. A. Hamilton performed secretarial duties in the absence of that officer. It was voted to contribute five dollars to the state federation’s young artists awards fund. The semi-annual account of finances was made by Mrs. Janie Adair. Members were advised the next club meeting will be in February.

Boosted by a 48-38 victory over rival Wewoka Tuesday night, the Seminole high school basketball Chieftains will take on Oklahoma City’s St. Mary’s Rockets tonight in a non-conference contest at 7:30 in the Seminole high school gym. The Seminole Braves will play the Saint Mary’s “B” squad in a preliminary game set for 6 p.m.
