2020: The Year of Molehills
In the later months of most years, people begin talking about the year’s events as a whole. Most of the time this involves a few scandals, a couple of memories, and maybe a trend or two. However, this year there is plenty to unravel. Everyone has started making claims that all essentially amount to, “This year is going to be remembered forever. There were so many crazy things that happened.” These people would be right on one account. A multitude of memorable moments occurred in the year 2020, however, the first half of the claim could quite possibly ring false. Human beings tend to exaggerate things. Every generation feels as though their scandals, memories, and trends are the most important events to occur in the span of human history. The year 2020, while certainly a wild ride, will most likely not be remembered in the history books as “The Worst Year Ever” like some people have asserted.
Everyone already knows what happened this year so a review is not necessary. With that statement out of the way, everyone can agree that the year 2020 proved to be a bite that the world did not seem like it could quite chew. Now, moving into 2021, people are wondering, “Will we ever get back to normal? Is it possible?” It is not just possible, it is almost a certainty. The human species is adaptable. We’ve overcome almost everything to step in our path, and even when, on occasion, we suffer a loss, we hike up our boots and wade through the mud, blood, sweat, and tears of the filthiest aspect of the world. Humans have survived the Black death. We’ve made it through crusades. We’ve eliminated slavery from oppression’s right hand and created a society where equality is at least valued. We saved the world from Hitler. We tore down the Berlin Wall. We came together after 9/11 to end global terrorism. We’ve made mistakes along the way, but humanity can take a few punches, and deal some back. Wherever there is inequality, we will end it. Wherever there is famine, we will provide. We are humanity and we’re far from perfect, but we can endure more than having to order Walmart groceries to go.
Through violence, infection, minor inconvenience, and National politics, people will survive. Just because a situation is not ideal does not make it impossible to overcome. This year has only provided the world with a couple of molehills, so let’s please not make them into mountains.
