‘Boots And Badges’ Blood Drive Friday At Fire Department
An annual competition between the Seminole firefighters and law enforcement officers is set to return this Friday.
No, this is not a physical competition to see who is the strongest. It’s a friendly contest designed to help save lives.
The “Boots and Badges Blood Drive” will take place this Friday, April 14 from 11 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. in the firehouse bays located on Harvey Road just east of the Strother intersection. Donors are encouraged to give blood in the name of either the fire department or the police department. The department with the most mentions is the winner.
“If you’re able to make a donation, come out Friday and do so. We’re cleaning up the bays right now to get ready for you,” Fire Chief Fielding Lucas said Monday morning. Lucas added that the department plans to serve hot dogs during the event, as long as they don’t get called out for an emergency.
“Come on out and support the Blue Line,” Police Chief Jon Withers said. “We’d like to win the competition this year.”
According to Our Blood Institute, someone needs blood every two seconds. Most people can donate blood, assuming they’re feeling well. People with many health conditions – like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol – can still donate blood if their condition is well managed. In the days leading up to your donation, eat iron-rich foods like beef, nuts, whole grains and leafy greens. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. On the day of your donation, make sure to eat a meal before you give. Wear short sleeves or a shirt where your inner elbow is accessible.
