Teen Driver Jailed After Fatal I- 40 Crash
A 19-year-old Shawnee man is facing charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol in relation to a fatal crash in Seminole County Thursday morning.
According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s website, Jace Wilson was booked into the county jail at about 8:40 a.m. on Feb. 6, just hours after a threecar collision on Interstate 40 that left one man dead. Sources familiar with the situation said the accident was caused by a wrong way driver. The crash happened at approximately 2:04 a.m. on I-40 near mile marker 204 on the eastbound side. Much of Oklahoma, as well as Seminole County, was under a dense fog advisory at the time of the wreck.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported that Wilson was driving a 2022 Nissan Altima and was not injured in Thursday’s crash. Edmond resident Earnest Harrell, who was driving a Freightliner box-style truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 63-yearold Texas man, Suhaib Hassan, was transported to the OU Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition. Hassan was driving a 2017 International semi, which sustained significant damage. The incident was investigated by Trooper Ty Wallace #485 of the Seminole County detachment of Troop D.
Thursday’s crash marked the fifth fatality on the portion of I-40 that spans Seminole County in less than a week.
A triple fatality collision, reportedly also caused by a wrong-way driver, occurred late Saturday night, Feb. 1 at mile marker 200, which exits to Prague to the north and Seminole to the south. Killed in that crash were Corey Meek of Choctaw, Timothy Warmack of Okay, Oklahoma and Makayla Leach of Muskogee. Leach was a passenger in Warmack’s car. At least three other vehicles were involved in the accident, resulting in three hospitalizations.
Another deadly collision occurred at about 6:42 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 on the interstate at mile marker 208. (A previous article incorrectly stated that the crash happened Feb. 8). According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a Ford Econoline van hit a Volvo semi that was stationary due to a previous accident, killing the driver of the Ford, who was reportedly from Norman.
Although Wilson was booked into the Seminole County Jail on complaints of vehicular manslaughter and DUI, no formal charges had been filed against him as of press time Friday.
