Okmulgee High School Under Investigation by State Dept. of Education

Posted in:

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is investigating allegations of abuse at Okmulgee High School, located about an hour away from Seminole.

According to a news release, the OSDE was made aware of alleged “repeated infractions” through the department’s Awareity reporting system.

“I am deeply troubled by the allegations that have surfaced at Okmulgee High School,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters. “OSDE is meticulously reviewing multiple allegations that were simultaneously received through our Awareity system, and we will take immediate action to ensure that our students are protected. The safety of Oklahoma Students is our top priority. Ensuring public schools and their employees have the resources they need to protect students and are trained in how to report and manage allegations of any kind, is our priority. Any failure to report misconduct immediately will not be tolerated.”

Walters tweeted on X (formerly known as Twitter) Thursday that the complaints against the school include teacher misconduct, financial impropriety and a lack of disciplinary action.

The Okmulgee School Board reportedly scheduled a special meeting for Thursday evening, Jan. 30 to discuss the resignation of Superintendent Clay Vinyard, who was hired by the school board less than a year ago and officially started the position in June 2024.
