Local Official Agrees to Anger Management Course
Konawa City Manager Daniel Bruton has agreed to take anger management courses following public outcry over an exchange between him and a police officer that was captured on video.
On July 14, Bruton was stopped by Officer Johnathan Delfrate of the Konawa Police Department for speeding. In a bodycam video, which was subsequently broadcast on social media and picked up by Oklahoma City television news outlets, Bruton is heard berating the officer and threatening him with his job for pulling him over.
“I’ve got a water emergency, dude. There’s no water in town,” Bruton said in the video.
“But let’s slow down. Let’s do it safely,” Delfrate told Bruton. “This is my job. This is what I was hired to do.”
“Well, this is my job, and I’m your boss,” Bruton responded. “I’m in a hurry.”
“It doesn’t matter. You have to obey the law like everybody else,” Delfrate said.
“You’re about to not have a job,” Bruton fired back at Delfrate. “You understand that?”
In an Aug. 4 phone call with the Seminole Producer, Bruton apologized for his actions, which he says were brought on by frustration over local water system issues.
“I have made an apology to the officer. He’s a good cop and a good kid. I’m ashamed that I pushed it with him, but there was a lot of frustration leading up to that incident,” Bruton said.
According to Bruton, the “water emergency” he was responding to involved a water pump that was in danger of burning out.
“I was on my way to shut down a pump that had been running for about five hours. If that pump had burnt out, it would have cost us about $24,000. We’ve had water issues down here for a long time, and they just really get to me,” Bruton said.
Konawa Mayor Dave Herriman said Bruton has agreed to take an anger management course and additional management training. The issue was addressed in last Thursday’s city council meeting.
