Konawa Schools Go in Lockdown Mode Wednesday

Posted in:

Less than a week into the new school year, a Seminole County School had to go into lockdown mode over a potentially threatening situation.

Konawa Public Schools, which resumed classes last Thursday, entered a “soft” lockdown Wednesday afternoon that lasted about an hour. The district said the lockdown was initiated because a man had barricaded himself inside his home near the school.

Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m., the district made a social media post about the situation.

“The school was informed by Konawa PD that a man is barricaded a few blocks east of the school. We have gone to lockdown. No students will be released until the lockdown is lifted,” the district posted.

About an hour later, officials said the lockdown was lifted.

“We are going off of our soft lockdown at this time. Any students who walk home, we will keep here and deliver them home after the buses leave,” the follow-up post read.

Several people expressed displeasure with the Facebook only announcement, saying they should have been notified by phone about the incident. The district said it will utilize its mass notification system going forward.

“We apologize for the misstep. In all future, similar situations, parents will be notified via ParentSquare as well as FB,” the district posted in response to the complaints.

ParentSquare is a communication platform that offers school districts a mass notification system as well as other communication tools.
