Friday Last Day to Register to Vote in June Election

Posted in:

This Friday, May 16 is the last day to apply for voter registration to be eligible to vote in the June 10 Seminole County special election, Seminole County Election Board Secretary Amy Baker announced Tuesday in a press release.

A referendum to extend a current half-cent sales tax for an additional five years plus a proposal to modify Seminole County’s alcohol laws will be on the ballot.

The sales tax proposal reads as follows: “Shall the levy and assessment of a sales tax by Seminole County of one-half percent (1/2%) upon the gross proceeds of gross receipts derived from all sales or services in Seminole County upon which a consumer’s sales tax is levied by the state of Oklahoma, said sales tax to be applicable only when the point of sales is within the territorial limits of Seminole county extending for a five-year period beginning September 1, 2025, and all items that are exempt from state sales tax to be exempt from and county sales tax.”

Voters will also be asked to approve how the tax revenue will be divided. The County is proposing that 60% go toward the repair or replacement of county roads, bridges and equipment (20% to each commissioner district); 20% to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department and 20% county general government. On Feb. 10, the commissioners approved a June 10 election and the following proclamation regarding the alcohol law: “Shall the retail of alcoholic beverages by the individual drink for on-premises consumption be authorized and made lawful in Seminole County, Oklahoma, daily and conformance with state statute? Yes-for the proposition. No-against the proposition” Baker said that persons who are United States Citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 17 ½ years old are eligible to apply for voter registration. However, you must be at least 18 years old to vote.

Applications must be received by the County Election Board or postmarked no later than midnight, May 16. Applications postmarked after that time will be accepted, but will not be processed until after the June 10 Election. Applications may also be submitted to any motor vehicle agency that is also an official voter registration agency by the submission deadline.

Applicants will be notified in writing when their application has been processed. Approved voters will receive a Voter Identification Card in the mail. Some may receive a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application was not approved. Baker said those who do not receive a response within 30 days of submitting their application should contact the County Election Board office immediately.

June 10 ballot includes a proposal to extend a ½ cent county sales tax for an additional five years plus a proposal to modify Seminole County’s alcohol law to allow sales of alcoholic beverages every day, including Sundays.

The Seminole County Election Board reminds voters that applications must be approved by the County Election Board Secretary in order to vote.

Registered voters who have moved to Seminole County from a different county or state will need to complete a new Voter Registration Application in order to be eligible for elections in Seminole County.
