Early Voting in Municipal Elections Gets Underway Thursday

Posted in:

Early voting will get underway soon in two municipal elections in Seminole County.

For those who don’t want to wait until election day (Feb. 10) to cast their ballots in the Seminole City Council or Wewoka mayoral race, early voting will be available from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Friday, Feb. 6 at the Seminole County Election Board Office, located at 200 S. Brown Ave. in Wewoka.

Voters in Seminole’s Ward Three will decide whether to keep incumbent Jeff Nance as city councilman or elect George Gates to the post. Only registered voters who reside in Ward Three may vote. A ward map is available on the city’s website (seminole-oklahoma.net). Wewoka voters will decide a three-way mayoral race between Ann Hastings, Keith Kincade and Cheryl Legg.

Seminole County Election Board Secretary Amy Baker said early voting is open to all voters.

“You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board—from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on election day or who want to avoid long lines,” Baker said.

Oklahoma’s proof of identity law requires every voter who votes in person at the precinct polling place or during early voting at the County Election Board to show proof of identity before receiving a ballot. There are three ways to prove your identity: Photo identification card issued by the United States government, the State of Oklahoma, or a federally recognized tribal government; county election board voter identification card or affidavit with provisional ballot.

Baker also reminds voters that early voting will not be available at poll locations. Those with questions should contact the Election Board at 405-257-2786 or by email at seminolecounty@ elections.ok.gov.
