Deadly Weekend on Interstate 40
It was a deadly weekend on Interstate 40 in Seminole County, as four people were killed in two separate crashes.
Just before 11 p.m. Saturday, three people perished and several others were injured in a pileup that involved at least five vehicles. The accident was reportedly caused by a driver who was travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), 41-year-old Corey Meek of Choctaw was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado that collided with a 2016 Honda Civic driven by Timothy Warmack, 30, of Okay, Oklahoma. Meek was pronounced dead at the scene, as were Warmack and Makayla Leach, 30, of Muskogee. Leach was a passenger in Warmack’s car.
At least three other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Fifty-three-year-old Jason Starkey was ejected from the 2019 Chevrolet Trax he was driving and was transported by air to the OU Trauma Center in Oklahoma City, where he was listed in stable condition. His passenger, a 12-yearold female, was transported by air to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, where she was treated and released.

A semi overturned in the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 2 on I-40 near mile marker 210, resulting in a stretch of the highway being shut down for several hours. At the time of the rollover, the interstate had been open for only about an hour and a half following a triple fatality collision that happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday at mile marker 200. Another fatality occurred Sunday at around 7 a.m. at mile marker 208. Craig Chartney of Harrah, who was driving a 2015 Kia Optima, was not injured. His passenger, Heather Chartney, was also uninjured.
A school bus, reportedly from Mulberry, Arkansas came upon the scene, but the driver managed to swerve and avoid a collision.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including Seminole EMS, Miller EMS, React EMS, and the Cromwell, Prague, Seminole and Strother Fire Departments. The accident was investigated by Trooper Easton Francis #205 of the Hughes County Detachment of Troop D. The eastbound lanes of the interstate were shut down until about 3:30 a.m.
Another deadly collision occurred at about 6:42 a.m. Sunday on the interstate at mile marker 208. Creek Nation EMS and the Cromwell Fire Department responded to that fatality, which closed the inside eastbound lanes and the westbound lanes. According to the OHP, a Ford Econoline van hit a Volvo semi that was stationary due to a previous accident, killing the driver of the Ford. At press time, the name of the deceased had not been released. The wreck was investigated by Trooper Easton Francis #205 of the Hughes County Detachment of Troop D.
A third accident, in which a semi overturned, occurred at about 5:10 Sunday morning at mile marker 208. Only minor injuries were reported, but the east bound lanes of the interstate were shut down until the truck was righted and the scene was cleared. The closure lasted at least until 11 a.m. The Cromwell Fire Department and Creek Nation EMS responded to the incident.
