ATV Accident Claims Life of 8-Year-Old Girl

Posted in:

A young Maud girl was killed Tuesday afternoon when the side-by-side she was driving flipped over and pinned her inside the vehicle.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), the accident happened at about 1:26 p.m. on private property located on Highway 59, about a quarter of a mile southwest of Maud.

The girl, whose name was not released, was reportedly driving a 2016 Polaris Range that flipped as she attempted to make a sharp turn. She was pinned inside for an undetermined amount of time before being freed by the Maud Fire Department. The victim was transported by REACT Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Shawnee, where she was pronounced dead due to head, internal and external trunk injuries.

According to the OHP, the girl was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and its cause was listed as unsafe speed.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Ferguson #377 of Troop A. Assistance was provided by Trooper Eads #369 of Troop A, Trooper Messer #333 and Trooper Wild #732 of the Seminole County Detachment of Troop D.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSP) latest report, from 2018 through 2020, there were 2,448 deaths in the United States associated with OHVs, which includes all-terrain vehicles, recreational off-highway vehicles and utility-terrain vehicles. ATVs accounted for more than two-thirds of the deaths. Nearly 300 deaths were among children under the age of 16. CPSC collects death and injury data related to ATV use but there is a significant time lag in the data. The 2013 report, for instance, was released in 2015 and the most recent complete data in that report was from 2009.
