According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, cortisol is released as part of the human body's natural response to stress. Though cortisol is not inherently harmful, the URMC reports that studies have suggested high levels of cortisol resulting from long-term stress can increase blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressure. Such increases elevate individuals' risk for heart disease. Various studies have found that acute stress can have a positive impact, providing motivation to accomplish goals and overcome daily challenges. However, individuals with chronic stress are urged to speak with their physicians so they can avoid the adverse outcomes, including heart disease, that can develop when individuals have high levels of cortisol related to long-term stress.
