As Long Term Care Ombudsmen, our work is to ensure that residents of long term care facilities consistently receive quality, dignified, person-centered care. Often residents and their family members believe freedom of choice has ended upon admission into a long term care facility and that there are limitations on input about the care they receive. On the contrary, not only is choice a vital part of the resident’s quality of life but it is required by law that the facility provide it to all residents.

I’ve been thinking for 3 days about what to write about. Then, when I think I know, it takes FOREVER to get it going on the Mac. Before I even have time to find it, the phone rings. It’s the library telling me several boxes of cards have been brought in from people donating them to my cause of making cards 4 times a year for about 340 residents from 6 area nursing homes. All I have to ask Resses is “Do you want to go?” She grabs one of her chew toys and starts to wiggle as she runs in circles. So, I load her up in the car and we’re off to the library. My goodness, there must be hundreds. I’m ecstatic!

Read moreChoiceMatters, an Oklahoma non-profit dedicated to increasing education options for parents, today praised Oklahoma State Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat for filing SB 1647, the Oklahoma Empowerment Act. The bill proposes giving parents control over a portion of their children’s education tax dollars, in the form of Oklahoma Empowerment Accounts. The accounts would be eligible to fund private school tuition or to supplement home schooling with approved technology expenses, enrichment materials or other educational services.
