Left, firefighters quickly responded to a large grass fire near Wewoka Thursday afternoon. Seminole County Emergency Manager Aaron Sowder said there are several fire crews in the area on standby, and Wewoka firefighters were joined by crews from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Seminole Nation, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Texas Parks and Wildlife Firefighters, Colorado State Forestry Wildland Fire Fighters, and a crew from Montana. As of Friday afternoon, County Commissioners in 29 counties have issued burn bans. The continuing stretch of hot and dry weather has created conditions that are favorable to grass fires, and even without a burn ban the public is encouraged to avoid outside burning.
